About the Campaign

City Harvest Board Member Dana Cowin, then the Editor-in-Chief of Food & Wine Magazine, started Skip Lunch Fight Hunger in 2002 because she wanted to do something to help children facing hunger in NYC. By passing brown paper bags out to magazine executives and asking them to donate their lunch money to City Harvest to fight child hunger, they raised an incredible $60,000 in one day.

Since then, thousands of New Yorkers have come together each spring to support City Harvest’s annual Skip Lunch Fight Hunger campaign, raising more than $8 million to fight child hunger in our city. By passing our brown paper bags, holding potlucks, bake sales, raffles, and other office fundraisers, New Yorkers demonstrate the power of coming together to make a difference for our city’s kids. Join us by starting a team, and rallying your friends, family, and colleagues to donate what they would normally spend on lunch to help feed NYC’s kids. Just $15 helps make 60 happy tummies. Together, we can turn one lunch into a bunch!

Right now, with nearly 365,000 children facing hunger in New York City, our work is more important than ever. Skip Lunch Fight Hunger raises funds to ensure that our trucks are on the road seven days a week, rescuing and delivering fresh, nutritious food for children and families in need.

About City Harvest

City Harvest pioneered food rescue in 1982 and, this year, will collect 59 million pounds of excess food to help feed the nearly 1.3 million New Yorkers struggling to put meals on their tables. Through relationships with farms, grocers, restaurants, and manufacturers, City Harvest collects nutritious food that would otherwise go to waste and delivers it free of charge to 500 soup kitchens, food pantries and other community food programs across the five boroughs. In addition, our Healthy Neighborhoods initiative addresses long term food insecurity through community partnerships that work to increase access to affordable and wholesome food.
